The Garage Gallery has always looked for ways to give back to the community we are a part of. Starting in our first year, we raffled off a painting during the month of November and donated all proceeds to the Humboldt Legion. Since that first charitable endeavor, we have continued to look for ways to support those around us and this lead us to the creation of Art for a Cause. To date we have done two sessions, donating to Bruno's Cherry Sunday and to the Humboldt SPCA.
The cause we have chosen to support with our winter themed kit is the Corey's Kit. The holiday season can be difficult for those who are already struggling and it takes a great deal of courage to admit when you need help. Wait times at Mental Health intakes can be long and those seeking help often leave before getting that help. Corey's Kit is a small act of kindness - it is something to show that there are people who care.
What is the Corey's Kit?
Corey's Kit contains a toothbrush, toothpaste, bar of soap and a comb and is given out to people seeking mental health help at Mental Health and Addiction clinics, Hospitals, and Detox intakes. The purpose of these kits goes beyond simple hygiene, it is a way of giving those seeking help, people who often feel like no one cares, a sense of their humanity back.
